WASHINGTON, May 30, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On June 1 NeighborWorks America launches NeighborWorks Week, a week-long celebration where thousands of volunteers come together to help make their neighborhoods healthy, sustainable places to work, play and call home. From June 1 through June 8 across the country, individuals and families are working to build vibrant communities during NeighborWorks Week. NeighborWorks America, which creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities, supports a network of more than 235 nonprofits, located in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
"For 30 years, during NeighborWorks Week, NeighborWorks organizations have worked with residents, volunteers, civic and business leaders to revitalize communities and improve people's lives," said Eileen Fitzgerald, CEO of NeighborWorks America.
This is the 30th annual NeighborWorks Week. NeighborWorks America and its network of local nonprofit organizations mobilize tens of thousands of volunteers, businesspeople, neighbors, friends, and local and national elected and civic leaders in a week of community change and awareness. They rehab and repair homes, paint and landscape properties, conduct neighborhood tours, recognize successful partnerships, and host events that educate,train and inform.
A few examples of this year's NeighborWorks Week events are the following:
- Affordable Housing Alliance, Inc. (Eatontown, NJ) will bring approximately 100 volunteers to a rebuilding effort in a Superstorm Sandy-damaged area.
- Neighborhood Housing Services of Kansas City, Inc. (Kansas City, MO) will present an educational symposium on building better nonprofits and communities. Featured speakers will present topics related to the role of nonprofit organizations in urban redevelopment; the changing economic climate; and the economic impact on nonprofit, private business, and government relationships.
- Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation (Ventura, CA), featuring its NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center, will host a homeownership and homebuyer education event with other community and industry professionals providing community members with free opportunities to gain valuable information that can help them work toward home ownership, economic advancement and self-sufficiency. The event will include a Home Buyer/Home Ownership Education Workshop and seminars and a homeownership resource fair entitled Pathways to HomeOwnership.
- Neighborhood Housing Services of Beloit, Inc. (Beloit, WI) will host a picnic to celebrate the revitalization and rehabilitation of the near west side of Beloit. Neighbors in the blocks where Neighborhood Housing Services of Beloit, Inc. has rehabilitated blighted homes will celebrate both the rehabs and the landscaping of neighboring homes that the organization completed.
- Housing and Neighborhood Development Services, Inc. (Orange, NJ) invites Orange residents, stakeholders and local businesses to engage in greening the Valley Arts District in Orange and West Orange, NJ. The Green Orange initiative will empower residents, promote sustainability, revitalize neighborhoods and create community.
