The ceremony had the assistance of several local authorities, community and opinion leaders such as Mr. John Walsh, U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado, the Colorado State Senator Irene Aguilar, representing the Mayor of Denver Michael Hancock, the Director of the Denver Office of Economic Development Mr. Paul Washington and former Mayor of Denver and President for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Bill Vidal.

The "Ohtli" is awarded to distinguished individuals who through their work have contributed to the betterment of our community and Mexicans living abroad. "Mario Carrera is an example of determination and hard work rewarded with success. He is a reflection of the benefits and positive impact that immigration has in the host country. Mario has not forgotten his roots, traditions, culture and most important, he is always willing to share his experience and knowledge with others," stated Adrian Garcia, Acting Consul General from the Consulate General of Mexico in Denver.

"In a sense, the 'Ohtli' award recognizes the dreams and aspirations of a nine year old Mexican immigrant boy that came to the United Stated in the early seventies, with the desire and mission to bring both sides together... For me, an example is the fulfillment of that mission in the passion and interest of our community in education and creating a level playing field for every one, because it brings people together and is a channel for upper mobility. The Ohtli for me continues to inspire and provide confidence to persevere and carry on," emphasized Carrera during his remarks.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Denver recognizes Mario Carrera and his effort for the benefit of the Mexican and Hispanic community in the United States, and reaffirms the commitment of the Mexican Government with its communities abroad.
