Advisory: Fired Workers, Community Slam Eaton Centre Richtree Restaurant at Grand Re-opening Day Action

"I'd like a serving of justice with my meal!"

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 9, 2013) -

Press Advisory: Attention tourism, labour, business editors

WHERE: Eaton Centre, Queen Street Entrance
WHEN: Monday, September 9th
10 AM: Meet fired workers at the time they would normally "report for work." (Queen St. Entrance)
5 PM: Rally/leaflet at Queen Street Entrance; offering Grand Re-Opening Special Coupons for "one serving of justice."
WHY:
50 long-time workers at the Eaton Centre Richtree Restaurant, all members of UNITE HERE Local 75, were laid off in January, and were shocked to find out the restaurant was re-opening non-union, without them, on September 9th. This is a clear violation of labour law, and of these workers' collective agreement. Many of the workers are now struggling to make ends meet. On Monday, they ought to be reporting for their first day back. But there is a larger issue at stake. If an employer can dodge a union contract by simply renovating and reopening, we'd see far fewer union businesses, lower wages, fewer workers with benefits - but a lot more "renovated" businesses!
VISUALS: Photos of fired workers; lively informational picket line at 5 PM; delegation with Grand-Re-Opening Day Coupons asking Richtree for "One Serving of Justice," approximately 5:30 PM.
