FDA ACCEPTERAR REGISTRERINGSANSÖKAN (NDA) FÖR PRÖVNING AV PRODUKTEN EPANOVA SOM ÄR UNDER UTVECKLING FÖR BEHANDLING AV SVÅR HYPERTRIGLYCERIDEMI

AstraZeneca meddelar idag att den amerikanska Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
har accepterat att pröva en registreringsansökan (NDA) för EpanovaTM , som är
under utveckling för behandling av patienter med svår hypertriglyceridemi
(triglyceridnivåer högre än eller lika med 500mg/dL). Registreringsansökan för
Epanova skickades in av Omthera Pharmaceuticals, ett numera helägt AstraZeneca
-dotterbolag, som en 505(b)(1) ansökan, i juli 2013. Datumet, (The Prescription
Drug User Fee Act) också kallat PDUFA-datum, då FDA ska lämna besked, är satt
till 5 maj 2014.

Ansökan för USA innehåller data från farmakokinetiska- och fas 3-kliniska
studier i syfte att undersöka säkerhet och effektprofil för Epanova, en mjuk
gelatinkapsel, innehållande en komplex blandning av fleromättade fria fettsyror
framställda från fiskolja. Under 2012 rapporterades positiva resultat från två
fas 3-studier (EVOLVE och ESPRIT) som analyserade Epanovas effektivitet när det
gäller att sänka mycket höga triglycerider och minska icke-HDL kolesterol i
kombination med ett statin för patienter med höga triglycerider. FDA har gjort
ett Special Protocol Assessment över båda studierna.

About Epanova™
Epanova is a patent protected, novel, ultra-pure mixture of the free fatty acid
forms of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) that
meaningfully reduces triglycerides, improves other key lipid parameters and is
expected to increase patient convenience with 2-gram once-a-day dosing with or

About hypertriglyceridemia
Hypertriglyceridemia is a serum lipid disorder (dyslipidemia) defined by serum
triglyceride levels of ≥150 mg/dL. It is associated with an increased risk of
cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease, or acute risk of
pancreatitis if triglyceride levels exceed 500 mg/dL. In 2011, dyslipidemia
affected 352 million people aged 20 or older across the major pharmaceutical
markets (United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and
Japan), caused by genetic predisposition and various secondary/contributing
factors, such as lifestyle and dietetic behaviour (e.g. obesity, malnutrition,
metabolic syndrome), as well as by numerous diseases (e.g. diabetes, renal
disease, autoimmune diseases). It is estimated that there are 5 million patients
in the U.S. with TG levels > 500 mg/dL. A recent NHANES analysis of dyslipidemia
in the US indicated that low-density lipoprotein levels have actually declined
since the last analysis, but the percentage of patients with severe
hypertriglyceridemia has risen sharply along with the dramatic increases in
obesity.
