CEP America Names Saint Francis Memorial Hospital 2013 Practice of the Year

EMERYVILLE, Calif., Sept. 30, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CEP America named Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco as 2013 Practice of the Year at its annual Partnership Meeting in Los Angeles. Chief Executive Officer, Wesley A. Curry, MD, FACEP, and Chief Operations Officer, Theo Koury, MD, FACEP, announced the award in front of an audience of over 1,000 providers, nurses, and hospital administrators at the annual awards dinner, where four other locations also received recognition as Distinguished Practices.

"We are thrilled to be recognized by CEP America with such a distinguished honor," said Dennis Kneeppel, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nurse Executive at Saint Francis. "Our emergency department and inpatient department work tirelessly on process improvement so that Saint Francis provides excellent quality care for our patients through our advanced triaging system and integrated services."

Saint Francis Memorial Hospital has the second busiest ambulance traffic volume in San Francisco, and was recognized for seamless integration between the emergency department (ED) and hospitalist service resulting in substantial operational improvements. Staffed by CEP America emergency physicians and hospitalists, the providers have worked towards improving throughput between the ED and the inpatient department, thereby enhancing the patient experience.

Since last year, Saint Francis' median time to provider (TTP) has fallen to under nine minutes while turnaround time to discharge (TAT-D) from the ED has dropped to less than 120 minutes. Additionally, this enhanced collaboration between the two departments has resulted in an average length of stay for admitted patients of 3.59 days. Saint Francis continues to improve operations throughout the hospital and exemplifies the benefits of a truly integrated acute care continuum.

Curry and Koury also recognized four practice locations as Distinguished Practices, including John Muir Medical Center in Concord, Calif.; San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning, Calif.; St. John's Hospitals in Oxnard and Camarillo, Calif.; and Swedish/Edmonds Hospital in Edmonds, Wash.
