Teams include the University of Southern California (USC), Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and Santa Clara University.
The Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges 19 collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

The Solar Decathlon will take place at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif. Free to the public Thursdays through Sundays, the competition houses will be open to visitors for eight days over two weekends, Oct. 3-13, 2013. The Solar Decathlon enables visitors to tour the houses, gather ideas to use in their own homes and learn how simple energy-saving features can help them save money today, while benefiting the generations of tomorrow.
