Wharton Executive Education Enters Third Year Sponsoring Wharton Seminars for Business Journalists

Four-Day Program Starts October 13, Teaching Reporters Business Fundamentals to Help Improve Their Understanding of Corporate Financials, Other Business Areas

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 11, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Wharton School's Aresty Institute of Executive Education is entering its third year as a sponsor of the Wharton Seminars for Business Journalists.

The program, now in its 45th year, was founded by the Wharton Communications Office in 1968, with the goal of helping journalists gain a better understanding of key business issues.

To date, more than 2,000 journalists in print, broadcast, and electronic media have participated in the program, which has expanded their knowledge of business, increased their exposure to leading experts and broadened their perspectives. The Seminars continue to grow with sessions annually on the West Coast and around the world making the program even more accessible to the journalism community.

The 2013 Flagship program takes place at Wharton's Philadelphia campus and kicks off with sessions on leadership and strategic thinking on Sunday, Oct 13. Discussions on Monday, Oct. 14 will focus on the fundamentals of accounting and the changing business environment. The lunch keynote speaker is Monica McGrath, Ph.D., the new vice dean of Wharton Executive Education, who will discuss women and leadership.

"Wharton Executive Education is pleased to support this program as it delivers learning that journalists can immediately apply as they seek to improve their working knowledge of business and management practices," says Dr. McGrath. "Wharton Executive Education's mission and the mission of the Seminars program are one and the same—we too are striving to provide better understanding and insights about business issues to help professionals make a difference in their organizations through knowledge and exposure to Wharton faculty thought leadership."

On Tuesday, Oct. 15 participants will explore global pension challenges and real estate and the economy, followed by sessions on how to analyze financial statements. Tuesday's keynote speaker is Benjamin E. Robinson III, PhD., chief administration officer for Prudential Annuities. The program concludes on Wednesday, Oct. 16 with a continued focus on financial statement analysis and a discussion with Wharton Wealth Management Initiative academic director, Christopher Geczy on "Financial Markets and Investment Management: Did Diversification Fail Us?"

Executive Education's sponsorship includes scholarships for business journalists to attend the program at no cost. This year's scholarship recipients are:

  • Erin Arvedlund, Columnist, Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Nancy Cook, Correspondent, National Journal
  • Hannah Dreier, Gambling Reporter, Associated Press
  • Erika Fry, Reporter, FORTUNE
  • Eunmi Christina Lee, Producer, Bloomberg TV
