Alameda Health System Officially Takes Ownership of San Leandro Hospital From Sutter Health

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., Oct. 31, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Alameda Health System (AHS) and Sutter Health announced that the San Leandro Hospital transfer of ownership is complete. At 12:00 am on October 31, 2013, San Leandro Hospital became a part of the AHS family of hospitals and wellness centers.

San Leandro Hospital will continue to provide emergency and inpatient hospital care services to the community. Under the July agreement Sutter Health donated the assets of San Leandro Hospital, including the building, land and equipment, to AHS through a transfer of ownership. Sutter Health also established a $22 million fund to transfer the hospital and support its ongoing operations through the transition. AHS assumed control of that fund today.

The acquisition of the San Leandro Hospital is a significant milestone in AHS' plans to increase access to quality, affordable care across Alameda County.

AHS will continue operating the current hospital services, including the emergency department, while evaluating the future health and wellness needs of the community. AHS will also create a new acute rehabilitation center to serve patients suffering from multiple traumas, brain injuries and strokes.

"The addition of San Leandro Hospital to the AHS family enables us to fulfill our goal of expanding health care services to the larger community while broadening our reach and our reputation as a provider of choice in the East Bay," said AHS Chief Executive Officer Wright L. Lassiter, III.

AHS Chief Administrative Officer James Jackson assumes the day-to-day management of San Leandro Hospital in addition to his current duties at Fairmont Hospital.

"We're so glad we were able to donate the hospital," said David Bradley, President of the Sutter Health East Bay Region. "AHS has been a tremendous partner. We're thankful for their work and the support of the larger community, which came together to make this transition possible."

San Leandro Hospital is a 93-bed facility owned and operated by AHS, a growing public health care system headquartered in Oakland, California with more than 3,800 employees and 800 physicians.
