New Jersey Orthopedists Use Early Diagnosis and Conservative Treatment to Get Patients Back on Their Feet

Dr. Hollawell and His Fellow Physicians at the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey Use Early Diagnosis to Prevent the Development of More Serious Complications

WALL, NJ--(Marketwired - Nov 5, 2013) - Dr. Shane Hollawell, a New Jersey foot and ankle specialist, works with his fellow physicians at the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey to provide patients with comprehensive care including physiatry, pain management, and podiatry. Dr. Hollawell, who focuses on foot and ankle problems, uses a combination of early proper diagnosis and conservative treatment to help patients return quickly to their normal levels of activity.

According to Dr. Hollawell, the most common foot injuries he sees at his practice are fractures, sprains, strains, and overuse injuries such as tendinitis. He notes the importance of early diagnosis, highlighting that if patients neglect tendinitis, the condition can progress into an actual tendon tear. The injuries he sees at the New Jersey orthopaedic practice can range from straightforward condition such as a non-displaced fracture to complex displaced fractures that can affects multiple joints.

To diagnose a patient's condition, Dr. Hollawell conducts a thorough physical examination that includes palpation, range of motion, and visual inspection to note any discoloration, bruising, or edema. These signs are often compared to the non-injured foot or extremity. X-rays are an additional helpful tool when diagnosing foot injuries, though in cases where x-rays are equivocal, a CAT scan can be very useful. For soft tissue injury diagnosis, MRI imaging is an excellent modality when evaluating for cartilage abnormalities, ligament injuries, or a tendon tear.

Dr. Hollawell believes that early range of motion and mobility is a key component in improving a patient's response to injury. He often employs early passive range of motion in conjunction with non-weight-bearing physical therapy immediately after injury whenever possible. For patients whose limbs require rest from overuse or injury, Dr. Hollawell utilizes bracing, casting, or a pneumatic cam walker.

Foot surgery is recommended when there is a traumatic injury that will result in improper function if left uncorrected or when a joint is inherently unstable and will likely impact the patient's ability to return to pre-injury activity. Dr. Hollawell also recommends surgery in cases where there is a progressive deformity that does not respond to conservative care, such as a progressive adult-acquired flatfoot deformity, advanced painful hallux abductovalgus/bunion deformity, and/or advanced painful arthritis, as some of the more common conditions.

At the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey conservative care is preferred over elective sports medicine surgeries whenever possible. Conservative methods include anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, corticosteroid injections, bracing, and orthotics. The practice also has the benefit of an on-site physical therapy facility with experienced therapists that are familiar with Dr. Hollawell's rehabilitation protocols and can help expedite and improve patient outcomes.
