Battelle to Help Medicaid, Medicare Develop Performance Indicators

Experience With Electronic Healthcare Records, Affordable Care Act, High Tech Act Positions Battelle Experts to Work on Large Contract

COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwired - Nov 20, 2013) - Battelle will help change for the better the way healthcare in the United States is delivered by working with the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) to develop measurement and performance indicators.

Battelle is one of 18 companies that will compete on the task order contract with an $800 million ceiling. "We are going to help drive the development of quality indicators and measures that will determine the value of services provided by doctors and hospitals," said Jeff Geppert, a Research Leader in Battelle's Advanced Analytics and Health group.

During the past decade, Battelle experts have done a great deal of research for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and has built a broad knowledge base for understanding service and payment changes deriving from the Affordable Care Act, stimulus funds designated for installing electronic healthcare records in hospitals and other providers, and the High Tech Act, which mandates how data must be used in the healthcare space.

"We helped the agency develop the measures and we provide technical assistance to providers working to implement them," said Geppert. "Now we will be working with CMS to improve the quality of healthcare and make it more affordable. We want to do it in a way that enables providers to be able to succeed at their missions."

Battelle research has been forward thinking and has developed objective measures of quality healthcare to help determine how medicine should be practiced -- paying for outcomes instead of a fee-for-service basis.
