New York State Department of Financial Services Enters Agreement with Prometric for Computer-Based Delivery of Licensing Examination Services

Prometric to Deliver 50,000 Exams Annually as Part of Multi-Year Agreement

NEW YORK, Dec. 18, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The New York State Department of Financial Services and Prometric, a trusted provider of market-leading test development and delivery solutions, have signed an exclusive, multi-year agreement for the computer-based delivery of licensing examination services. Approximately 50,000 exams are expected to be delivered each year by Prometric to in-state residents and out-of-state applicants. Approximately 195,000 total licenses were issued in New York in 2012 for adjusters, agents and brokers.

New York State Insurance Law requires individuals seeking to obtain agent, broker or public adjuster licenses to complete an approved pre-licensing course and process an application with passing score report and fee.  Pursuant to Article 21 of the state's Insurance Law, candidates must be 18 years of age or older to apply for an insurance license.  Licenses are eligible for renewal if it is within 180 days of the expiration date of the license.  Producers whose license has been lapsed for two years or more are required to retake the examination.

"We understand and appreciate the significant responsibility of helping the State of New York uphold the public's confidence in the insurance industry, and our testing operations are well-suited to deliver accurate and trusted test results for State licensing purposes," said Prometric CEO Michael Brannick.  "Prometric is committed to a set of values that further ensure every honest test taker receives a fair opportunity to reach their career and education goals."

The Insurance Department was created in 1859 by the New York State Legislature and assumed the functions of the Comptroller and Secretary of State relating to insurance.  The Department began operations in 1860.  The Insurance Division supervises all insurance companies that do business in New York.  The Insurance Division oversees nearly 1,700 insurance companies with assets exceeding $4.2 trillion.  The Division includes the Property, Life and Health Bureaus.
