FireEye Redefines the IPS Landscape With FireEye MVX-IPS

New FireEye MVX-IPS Brings MVX-Based Security Management and Dynamic Threat Intelligence to Intrusion Prevention Systems; Improves Correlation Between Known and Unknown Threats to Increase Protection and Reduce Remediation Costs

MILPITAS, Calif., Feb. 10, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FireEye, Inc. (Nasdaq:FEYE), the leader in stopping today's advanced cyber attacks, today announced FireEye® MVX-IPS, a new approach to Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) that modernizes the IPS security layer by incorporating FireEye MVX technology and FireEye Dynamic Threat Intelligence™. FireEye MVX-IPS is designed to provide a more comprehensive view of multi-vector attacks to boost threat protection against known and unknown attacks. FireEye MVX-IPS is now available in Beta and will be generally available as an add-on license for the FireEye Network Threat Prevention Platform (NX series) during the first half of 2014.

Current IPS products are deficient for two reasons -- they are signature-based and therefore unable to detect modern threats, and they create excessive alerts, requiring customers to devote additional resources to manage their system. FireEye MVX-IPS takes a new approach to IPS by extending FireEye's Multi-Vector Virtual Execution™ (MVX) technology to a new layer in the security stack, eliminating both problems created by traditional IPS solutions. The unique architecture of FireEye MVX-IPS allows validation of attacks identified by IPS, thereby reducing alerts and allowing security teams to focus on genuine threats. This approach consolidates threat prevention for known and unknown threats, increases the efficacy of defenses against known threats leveraging multi-protocol signatures, and optimizes time and resource investments needed to identify, validate and resolve these threats.

"While intrusion detection technology has held the promise of advanced threat detection for some time, it has generally failed to deliver by remaining too reliant on a signature-based approach. This has been one factor in moving the market towards alternative detection products such as STAP (Specialized Threat Analysis and Prevention)," said John Grady, research manager, security products at IDC. "The problem is that in most cases, the consolidated IPS functionality remains heavily signature oriented, thus only marginally improving security. Integrating STAP functionality directly with dedicated IPS technology, creates a more efficient and effective approach to detecting advanced, targeted attacks and greatly improves an organization's security posture."

"Current IPS products are failing to keep pace with the modern threat environment because they rely on the outdated signature-based model of protection, produce distracting false positives and lack actionable threat intelligence," said Manish Gupta, senior vice president of products at FireEye. "With FireEye MVX-IPS, organizations can consolidate threat defenses, receive timely, validated threat notifications and actionable insights that allow security teams to focus on quickly getting to remediation. We believe this new approach to IPS will save organizations time and expense, and reduce their exposure windows."

Capabilities of FireEye MVX-IPS include:

  • Validates attacks using FireEye MVX technology, minimizing time and resource investments resulting from false alerts.
  • Consolidates known and unknown threats on a single platform reducing appliance spread and corresponding expenses associated with deploying, integrating, and managing multiple appliances
  • Enhances the FireEye Threat Prevention Platform to provide a comprehensive integrated threat defense solution across known and unknown threats.
  • Creates actionable insights by correlating threats to derive richer intelligence and speed incident response times.

About FireEye, Inc.

FireEye has invented a purpose-built, virtual machine-based security platform that provides real-time threat protection to enterprises and governments worldwide against the next generation of cyber attacks. These highly sophisticated cyber attacks easily circumvent traditional signature-based defenses, such as next-generation firewalls, IPS, anti-virus, and gateways. The FireEye Threat Prevention Platform provides real-time, dynamic threat protection without the use of signatures to protect an organization across the primary threat vectors and across the different stages of an attack life cycle. The core of the FireEye platform is a virtual execution engine, complemented by dynamic threat intelligence, to identify and block cyber attacks in real time. FireEye has over 1,500 customers across more than 40 countries, including over 100 of the Fortune 500.
