CFR Presents Ten Tips on When and How to Select Carpeting

CHICAGO, Feb. 24, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- There is often a cost savings time of the year to buy certain products. This applies to automobiles, real estate...and carpeting. But, along with knowing when to purchase carpeting to get the best price possible, there are other issues homeowners and building managers should consider.

Because of this, Doug Berjer, a carpet cleaning expert and product manager for CFR (continuous flow recycling) carpet extractors, offers the following Ten Tips on how to select new carpeting:

  1. Buy when it's cold: The winter months can be the slow season for carpet dealers so buyers may be able to negotiate better prices.
  2. Padding: Typically, carpeting requires a layer of padding to help protect the carpet and reduce wear.
  3. Pile: While some buyers may want a plush pile, these tend to show footprints and vacuum tracks; this will not happen with low pile carpets.
  4. Wool or synthetic: Wool is usually more expensive and often requires more involved cleaning; synthetics such as Nylon tend to resist soiling and are often easier to clean and maintain.
  5. Price comparison: Some dealers have reduced charges for the carpet, but higher prices for installation; ask dealers to provide charges for both separately.
  6. Stain resistant: A stain resistant carpet will help protect against staining, however it can be more expensive. "If the carpet is near a kitchen or a food service area in a building, a stain resistant carpeting may be a 'must-have.' In other areas it may not be as important," says Berjer.
  7. Read the warranty: Carpet warranties are often dull and complicated; however, they are a must-read for buyers before making a selection.
  8. Color: Dark shades hide soiling; light shades show soiling.
  9. Cleaning: Always ask how the carpet should be cleaned. Using a bonnet system, for instance, may violate a carpet's warranty and damage carpet fibers.
  10. VOCs: Most carpets are now manufactured with fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These carpets have a reduced impact on building users and the environment.

"And always remember, selecting a carpet is a long-term investment," adds Berjer. "You want to make a selection that will meet needs and satisfaction now and for years to come."
