COLON CANCER ALLIANCE TEAMS UP WITH DOLLARSHAVECLUB.COM TO WIPE OUT COLON CANCER

Partnership aims to bring increased attention of the largely preventable disease through colon health education for National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

WASHINGTON, March 10, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Men's lifestyle brand, DollarShaveClub.com has joined forces with the Colon Cancer Alliance for National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, to tackle an often uncomfortable subject matter – getting checked for colon cancer. Research shows that the majority of people know that colon cancer is largely preventable and they should be screened, but about one third of people are still not taking action to get this life-saving check.

Even though colon cancer is 90% beatable when found early, the disease remains the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the US and the disease will impact an estimated 1 in 20 Americans in their lifetime. This month, DollarShaveClub.com, known for providing its members razors and other bathroom essentials right to their door, will also be sending a powerful message: Get checked for colon cancer – it can save your life. As part of this partnership:

  • DollarShaveClub.com will donate 5% of the March sales for its butt wipe for men, One Wipe Charlies, to the Colon Cancer Alliance to help raise money for the cause.
  • All month long DollarShaveClub.com will be sharing educational resources from the Colon Cancer Alliance in an effort to help its members live healthier and more successful lives.
  • Michael Dubin, DollarShaveClub.com's founder and CEO, will have his first colonoscopy at the recommendation of his family doctor. Dubin has a family history of colon cancer and is at high-risk for the disease. Beginning this week, Dubin will share his personal journey of the preparation for his colonoscopy along with the actual procedure on March 19 at 10:00 a.m. PST. Renowned colon and rectal surgeon, Dr. Mari A. Madsen, will perform the procedure in Los Angeles. During the procedure, DollarShaveClub.com will try to reach the 23 million Americans over age 50 who have not received the recommended screening for colon cancer that could save lives. When those loved ones and family members have been made aware, Colon Cancer Alliance advisors and doctors will take over DollarShaveClub.com's Twitter handle to answer any questions followers may have. Follow Dubin's journey at #DSColon.

"We are thrilled at this opportunity to use our huge platform to raise awareness, and help save lives," said Dubin. "On the recommendation of my family doctor, given my family history of colon cancer and polyps, I'm going to have a colonoscopy now. I want to share my experience to show that the procedure is nothing to worry about and to ultimately help our more than 500,000 members live happier and healthier lives."

"We are excited to partner with the DollarShaveClub.com. Michael and his team understand how important it is to get screened and with their good humor, we're going to reach more people than ever before with a life-saving message," says Eric Hargis, CEO of the Colon Cancer Alliance. "At the Colon Cancer Alliance, we're working to save lives by overcoming screening barriers. So if you're 50 years of age or younger and showing signs and symptoms, or have a family history, don't wait, talk to your doctor and get screened."

It is predicted that 136,800 people will be diagnosed with colon cancer in 2014 – those numbers comprised about equally of men and women. Unfortunately, there has also been a growing number of people under the age of 50 who have been diagnosed with the disease – about 15,000 people annually.

The Colon Cancer Alliance recommends that if you're at a high risk or are having signs or symptoms, talk to your doctor. Sometimes, there are no symptoms at all so having an open dialogue and knowing your family history is very important.
