Top CEOs Tell How They Learned to Trust Their Guts

New RHR International eBook Looks at the Role of Instinct in Business Decisions

CHICAGO, March 18, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- There's more to the role of chief executive than being brilliant with strategy or adept with numbers. At the CEO level, the problems are more complex and the solutions become more ambiguous. It takes experience, a few mistakes, solid feedback, and self insight to make the bold decisions that such situations demand.

Good CEOs learn from an early age to move on instinct. The more they test and react to their gut feelings, the more confidence they have in their perspective. They tend to move much faster than others do because they've taken the risks, pushed the envelope more than once, emerged from both success and failure, and in the process, honed their instincts.

"What Do Your Instincts Tell You?" is the third eBook in a series designed by RHR International to capture the wisdom of experienced CEOs and make it available as a practical guide for others who serve in a senior leadership position. In developing this series, RHR International sought insights from nine exceptional past and present CEOs. The panel includes:

  • Jim Hackett, CEO, Steelcase, Inc.
  • John Hanson, former CEO, and current non-executive chairman, Joy Global, Inc.
  • Mike Long, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Arrow Electronics
  • Denise Morrison, President and CEO, Campbell Soup Company
  • Clarence Otis, CEO, Darden Corporation
  • Rupert Pearce, CEO, Inmarsat
  • John Rowe, Chairman and CEO (retired), Exelon Corporation
  • Tarek Sherif, Chairman and CEO, Medidata
  • Herb Sklenar, Chairman and CEO (retired), Vulcan Materials Company

"Having trust in one's gut feeling is perhaps the most critical trait a CEO can possess," said Dr. Thomas J. Saporito, Chairman and CEO of RHR International. "Armed with curiosity, drive, and the expanded perspective from the top, effective CEOs are the ones that develop the ability to see things that others don't and inspire their teams to quick action when circumstances demand."
