AS&E Receives Order for New Middle East Customer for Six Z Portal Vehicle Screening Systems to Enhance Checkpoint Security

Purchase Strengthens AS&E's Foothold in Middle East

BILLERICA, Mass., April 2, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- American Science and Engineering, Inc., ("AS&E") (Nasdaq:ASEI) a leading worldwide provider of threat and contraband X-ray detection solutions, announced the receipt of an order for six Z Portal® multi-view X-ray screening systems for a new Middle East customer. The Z Portal systems — the first to be deployed in this Middle East country — will be used to improve checkpoint security and scan passenger vehicles, vans, trucks, and cargo for concealed threats and contraband.

"With well over 600 X-ray systems sold in the Middle East, AS&E systems have repeatedly proven their ability to ensure public safety in the region by reducing the level of vulnerability to explosive threats and contraband in parcels, vehicles and cargo," said Chuck Dougherty, President and CEO of AS&E. "These latest system deployments will further enhance checkpoint security and help solidify AS&E's position as the leading supplier for X-ray screening systems in the Middle East."

About Z Portal

The Z Portal system is the most comprehensive screening system available with multi-view, drive-through screening of cars, vans, trucks, and their cargo. The Z Portal system combines multi-view imaging (left, right, and top-down) with the superior detection capabilities of AS&E's patented Z Backscatter® technology to give comprehensive ability to detect explosives, drugs, stowaways, and other contraband while simultaneously facilitating the flow of traffic. With its compact design, the Z Portal system is ideal for high-traffic locations with space constraints and is safe for drivers, operators, cargo, and the environment. The relocatable screening system is available in two sizes — one for large trucks, buses, and cargo vehicles, and a smaller size for passenger vehicles.
