NACD Launches Video Series That Explores the Role of the Board in IT

The Intersection of Technology, Strategy and Risk Series Helps Boards and Management Communicate Effectively About the Role of Technology in Corporate Strategy

WASHINGTON, May 7, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) today announced the release of The Intersection of Technology, Strategy and Risk, a video series designed to help corporate directors better understand how emerging technologies are changing business, their opportunities and risks, and how the board can help ensure technology is integrated into strategy and enterprise risk management.

The Intersection of Technology, Strategy and Risk was developed with ISACA and KPMG LLP, the audit, tax, and advisory firm. The eight-module series was created to facilitate more technical literacy at the board level and encourage clearer communication between the board, management, and the chief information officer (CIO).

"NACD's most recent public company governance survey indicated 75 percent of directors want to improve their understanding of technology risk," said Ken Daly, NACD president and CEO. "This video series will help boards identify the issues they should be considering and the questions they should be asking their CIOs and others in the C-suite."

With insights from corporate directors, CIOs, and leading technology experts, NACD's eight-part video series focuses on critical IT areas for directors: how emerging technologies are altering the business landscape, critical questions boards should be asking about technology, the role of the CIO, fostering innovation and embracing disruption, managing cybersecurity risk, and the risks and rewards of social media.

"Executive management is becoming more involved with emerging issues such as advanced persistent threat attacks, according to 59 percent of respondents to ISACA's recent APT survey, and this is a positive development," said Tony Hayes, international president of ISACA. "This video series collaboration will help boards and executives as they continue to maximize value and effectively govern and manage information in their enterprises."

Fostering clearer communication between the CIO and the board is another critical component of The Intersection of Technology, Strategy and Risk. The video series features leading CIOs who offer their perspectives on the value they bring to the boardroom.

"Leveraging the collective knowledge of the C-suite, the board and the CIO can drive business in new ways and can often identify potential red flags and opportunities posed by new technologies," said David DiCristofaro, a KPMG partner and leader for IT Advisory in Risk Consulting. "But in order to leverage this knowledge, clear communication channels must be in place. These videos offer leading practices for companies to implement a culture that fosters this type of transparency."

Each of the video modules is complemented by additional resources, including white papers, articles, webinars, full transcripts, and a discussion guide for corporate directors who would like to explore each of these topics in their own boardrooms.
