Third Coyne College Student Receives $1,500 Women in the Trades Scholarship

Awarded to Women Seeking to Advance Their Education in Traditionally Male-Dominated Industries

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - May 12, 2014) - Coyne College, a leader in education and training for Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Electrical Construction and Maintenance, Electrical Construction and Planning, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding, and Physical Therapist Aide, is pleased to announce that Sharika Harris of Chicago recently received a $1,500 Women in the Trades (WITT) scholarship. WITT scholarships are awarded to women seeking to advance their education in traditionally male-dominated industries. The scholarship was introduced last year by The Dwyer Group®, a holding company with more than 1,500 franchises offering household services and repairs in 10 countries.

"Sharika is enrolled in our Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration diploma program, and we congratulate her on the scholarship," said Russell Freeman, President of Coyne College. "This is the third WITT scholarship that a Coyne College student has received since last fall. We appreciate the votes of confidence that The Dwyer Group has given us for training our female students to succeed in their chosen fields."

WITT scholarships are awarded each semester to women who aspire to excel within industry professions like plumbing, air conditioner and appliance service and repair, landscape management, and more. The provided funds are designated for attaining all necessary training and certification to assist these women in furthering their career goals and forging a path in the trade industries. Last fall, Coyne College Electrical Construction and Planning students Giselle Gomez and Veleska Novorolsky each received $1,500 WITT scholarship awards.

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that women have been making gains in the construction industry by nearly tripling their numbers in the last 40 years, but they still only accounted for 13 percent of the total construction workforce in 2009, up from 12 percent in 1984.
