Environmental Charges Laid Against Plains Midstream Canada ULC

Company is alleged to have failed to report Rangeland pipeline release as required under Alberta law

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - May 30, 2014) - Environmental charges have been laid against Plains Midstream Canada ULC for a pipeline incident that occurred on June 7, 2012, and resulted in 2,900 barrels of sour crude oil being released from the company's Rangeland pipeline into the Red Deer River near Sundre, Alberta.

The charges include a federal charge under the Fisheries Act and a provincial charge for failing to report a release of crude oil from a pipeline as required under Alberta law.

The provincial environmental charge stems from an Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) investigation that found the company failed to report the release as required within Alberta's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA).

On March 29, 2014, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) assumed jurisdiction for the matter under the Responsible Energy Development Act and the investigation was turned over to Alberta's new single regulator of energy development in Alberta.

The AER ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of hydrocarbon resources over their entire life cycle. This includes allocating and conserving water resources, managing public lands, and protecting the environment while providing economic benefits for all Albertans.
