ANS Encourages States to Utilize Nuclear Technology to Reach Carbon Reduction Goal

Proposed EPA plan aims to cut carbon emissions from power sector by 30%

LA GRANGE PARK, ILL., June 3, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Nuclear Society (ANS) calls for states to invest in nuclear technology to reach the 30% carbon emission reduction goal set forth in today's "Clean Power Plan" from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Nuclear technology has been and will continue to be used to distribute electricity that emits little to no greenhouse gases. ANS encourages states to consider the many ways that nuclear technology can help to meet the EPA's proposed goals, including the operation of new nuclear plants now under construction, deployment of new nuclear construction projects, and continued usage of present nuclear energy facilities.

"ANS considers nuclear energy an essential component of a diverse energy portfolio designed to address climate change policy and future energy needs," stated ANS President Donald R. Hoffman. "We believe that the increased use of nuclear energy in offsetting the use of fossil fuels, where appropriate, offers an effective means of reducing global carbon emissions."

Nuclear energy delivers large amounts of reliable, economically competitive electricity with no carbon emissions during reactor operations and has among the lowest lifecycle carbon emissions of any energy source.
