Oscilloquartz to Announce Mobile Network Operator Survey Results at WSTS

Survey Highlights the Critical Importance of Synchronization and Assisted Partial Timing Support for LTE-Advanced Networks

Martinsried/Munich, Germany, June 5, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Oscilloquartz announced today that it will reveal the results of its mobile network operators (MNOs) survey at WSTS. The survey is the first of its kind to focus purely upon the phase synchronization capabilities of existing mobile backhaul networks and examines MNOs migration plans for LTE-Advanced (LTE-A). The survey was conducted across the globe and polled participants from major MNOs. The results will be shared on Wednesday, June 11th at 0925 PDT by Gil Biran in one of three speaking sessions being held by Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company and the group's center of excellence for timing distribution and assurance. The results of the survey will be made publically available on Thursday, June 12th.

"There can be no question that 2014 will prove to be a critical year for MNOs, especially in regards to LTE-A and TD-LTE planning and deployment," said Gil Biran, general manager, Oscilloquartz. "That's why we conducted this survey. We wanted to show the wider industry how critical phase synchronization is to MNOs' LTE-A and TD-LTE migration plans and ultimately their long-term economic success. What was surprising about the results here are how little MNOs know about the current phase synchronization capabilities of their mobile backhaul networks. To capitalize on the tremendous business opportunities of LTE-A and TD-LTE, MNOs need to start rapidly developing a synchronization strategy. We're already helping a number of MNOs to do exactly this."

WSTS marks the first public event for Oscilloquartz since its acquisition by ADVA Optical Networking earlier in 2014. In addition to presenting the key findings of the MNO survey, Oscilloquartz will also be hosting two other sessions on field measurement options for network operators and the importance of assisted partial timing support (APTS). Part of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) G.8275.2 study, APTS reduces the dependency of MNOs on global navigation satellite systems while increasing the reliability and quality of phase synchronization in mobile networks. APTS also enables backhaul operators to leverage their existing packet network infrastructure to deliver highly accurate timing signals.

"There's a need for smooth migration from legacy to next-generation networks," explained Gil Biran. "APTS helps to overcome significant hurdles on the way to LTE-A. Many MNOs rely on several third-party wholesale providers that connect their LTE base stations. Every provider typically has an existing packet-network built on equipment from his preferred supplier. No two networks are identical and most of the legacy equipment lacks the ability to provide full on-path timing support. With APTS these discrepancies and deficiencies can be overcome without the cost of a major unifying network upgrade. The new Oscilloquartz is proud to take a lead role in WSTS, North America's most important synchronization event, and educate the industry. We have a deep understanding of the importance of accurate timing delivery and assurance, and look forward to discussing the new opportunities ahead."
