DAREarts Invited by New Credit First Nation To Create Film with Students

MISSISSAUGAS OF THE NEW CREDIT FIRST NATION, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 10, 2014) - DAREarts' Aboriginal Program, Nee-tum-ochi-bek, Oji-Cree for First Roots, has been invited by the educators at Lloyd S. King Elementary School in the Mississaugas of New Credit First Nation to work with their grade 5/6 students on a week-long project which will create an art film which teaches about Anishinabek world views and culture. The Seven Sacred Teachings will be coupled with the DAREarts values of Discipline, Action, Responsibility and Excellence.

Peter Elliott, videographer/editor, will be flying in straight from shooting the Atlantic series "Coldwater Cowboys" to co-teach with Mi'kmaq playwright/singer songwriter Cathy Elliott. They will be working alongside the school's Assistant/Coordinator Karl King, Teacher Catherine Shawana and Teacher's Assistant Caitland Harding.

DAREarts Founder Marilyn Field: "This is a wonderful opportunity for New Credit grade five and six children to extend their knowledge about their own world view to other kids in Canada." DAREarts Aboriginal Leader Cathy Elliott: "This is very exciting for me, to be welcomed to a community in the southern part of Ontario, to learn from the students and their Elders, both as an artist and as an Aboriginal Canadian. A fitting celebration of Anishinabek culture during this Aboriginal Month." Lloyd S. King Elementary School's Karl King: "Lloyd S. King is extremely excited to be part of this worthwhile project."

The Film Premiere, will be on Friday, June 13, 2014, 2:15pm at the New Credit First Nation Community Centre - 659 New Credit Road, R.R. # 6 Hagersville, Ontario. The Showcase will be opened by the Eshkinigijik Singers Drum Group and feature still photography by the students as well as their film. All are welcome. Presentation is free of charge.
