Behavioral Health Advocate James Lugannani Appointed to AHS Board of Trustees

Dr. Barry Zorthian Reappointed as Medical Staff Representative


OAKLAND, Calif., June 23, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Alameda Health System (AHS) announced that James Lugannani has been appointed to the AHS Board of Trustees for a three-year term. Mr. Lugannani is an account vice president at UBS Financial Services, where he is a portfolio manager for special needs families.

Mr. Lugannani's candidacy for this appointment was put forward by Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty and was approved by the full AHS Board. Previously, Mr. Lugannani was corporate vice president and chief planning officer at Kaiser Permanente Health Plans and Hospitals, and served as chief financial officer of DirecTV Japan and president of Hughes Electronics Japan. He is currently on the board of directors for the National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI), representing south Alameda County, and is an active leader with the Mental Health Association of San Francisco and The ARC of San Francisco, a non-profit organization serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Mr. Lugannani has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University and an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

AHS also announced that Dr. Barry Zorthian, MD, FACP has been reappointed to the Board of Trustees by Alameda County Board of Supervisors President, Keith Carson. She was initially nominated by AHS medical staff in 2010, and appointed in 2011 to serve as their Board representative. She will now continue in her role for an additional three years. Dr. Zorthian is an internist in AHS's Department of Medicine and an associate clinical professor of medicine at University of California San Francisco. She graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York.

Retiring Members of AHS Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees extends its thanks and recognition to retiring Board members Daniel Boggan, Jr., MSW, Stanley M. Schiffman, MPH, MSW, and J. Bennett Tate, for their years of service to AHS.

Mr. Boggan has been a Board member since 2005, and has served as Vice President and Board President. Previously, he was Chief Operating Officer of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Mr. Schiffman has served the Board since 2003, including a position as Board Treasurer. He is currently a consultant on human resources, health care benefits and workers compensation, and is a former executive director of a multi-program facility for the aged.

Mr. Tate was appointed to the Board in 2005, and previously served as Board President. His prior experience includes a position as vice president of a large hospital.
