Oakland's 1st Empowerment Scholarship Pageant Collaborates with the Peralta Colleges' Foundation for Girls 13-17 to Compete for Scholarships, Family Vacation, and Cash Prizes

OAKLAND, Calif., July 8, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - The 1st Annual Empowerment Scholarship Pageant & Brunch, a non-profit academic pageant is sponsoring 30 teen girls, ages 13 – 17, with 30 business owners as Godmothers & Mentors. The teen girls will compete for scholarships, cash prizes, family vacations and gifts. The event will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014, from Noon-3PM, at the Asian Cultural Center, 388 9th Street, Oakland, CA. Paula Welsh of Welsh Marketing Group is proud to be producing the event.

The purpose of the pageant is to: empower and encourage the future of girls, prevent them from becoming victims of violence, to become college educated, promote community leadership, and to be competitive in the today's job market. The distinguished key note speaker will be Dr. Elnora Webb, president of Laney College. The event's MC is Oakland's own celebrity chef Nikki Shaw, wife of Oakland's own NBA Coach Brian Shaw of the Denver Nuggets. The entertainment includes Bay Area's own comedian J. Redd, and the gospel group, Platinum Status, featuring international vocalist Althea Battle and their new CD release – Lord I Need You. The Oakland Ballet has been invited to perform as well.

The pageant producers have collaborated with the Peralta Colleges Foundation, Romeo Garcia, Director, and the "Rising Scholars' Voices Program" (RSVP), which supports students at the Laney, Merritt, College of Alameda and Berkeley City College. The top 5 winners will be invited to enroll in the RSVP two year program designed to prepare students for a career or a 4 year university to ensure success. Teens will be required to attend 12 weeks of classes on college preparation, international issues, social life skills/etiquette, internet training, finance, and local affairs.

The winners will be selected by a panel of 9 professional judges and sponsors on their communication skills and the content of their character. The event is sponsored by Southwest Airlines, CLOROX, Minuteman Printing Press, Center Stage Salon, and Torrey Pines Bank.
