Tandy Leather Factory, Inc. Reports July 2014 Sales Up 1% Over July 2013 Sales

Retail Same Store Sales Up 2%; Wholesale Same Store Sales Up 1%; Intl Same Store Sales Up 18%

FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 7, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tandy Leather Factory, Inc. (Nasdaq:TLF) reported today that sales for the month of July were $6.6 million, up 1% compared to July 2013 sales of $6.5 million. Year to date sales are up 3% to $44.3 million in the current year from $44.9 million last year.

Retail Leathercraft's sales rose 4% to $4.1 million compared to July 2013 sales of $3.9 million. The 76 comparable stores' sales were up 2% for the month compared to the same period last year. The four stores opened since July 2013 added July sales of $114,000. Year-to-date sales for Retail Leathercraft are $28.3 million this year, a 6% increase over sales of $26.8 million for the same period of 2013. As of the end of July, the 76 comparable stores' sales were up 4% compared to sales reported for the same period in 2013.

Wholesale Leathercraft posted sales of $2.2 million for July, down 6% compared to July 2013 sales of $2.3 million. Within the Wholesale Leathercraft division, the wholesale stores' sales were up 1% compared to July 2013 sales while National Account group sales were down 100%, or $161,000, as sales to this customer group ended in April. For the year to date, Wholesale Leathercraft sales are $15.5 million, down 2% from the same period of 2013. As of the end of July, the wholesale same store sales were up 1% compared to sales last year while the National Account group's sales were down 58%.

International Leathercraft reported July sales of $357,000, up 18% compared to July 2013 sales of $303,000. For the year to date, International Leathercraft sales were $2.4 million compared to $2.3 million in 2013, up 7%. All three stores in the segment have been opened for both periods, so same store sales for the month and year to date were the same as the segment's sales.

Chief Executive Officer and President, Jon Thompson, commented, "Our July sales gain was respectable and our international stores continue their solid growth.   Over the past several months, we have been able to purchase quite a bit of inventory at very competitive prices, which should contribute to the strength of our margins for the remainder of the year."

Shannon L. Greene, Chief Financial Officer added, "Our retail sales are showing some strength, but sales to our wholesale customers continue its weak trend. Retail sales result in solid gross profit margins, but our wholesale customers increase our ticket average. It's a delicate balance and one we analyze carefully."
