AlixPartners Expands Financial-Crimes and Anti-Money-Laundering Compliance Services

Firm enhances corporate-investigations offering for multinationals with hiring of regulatory-compliance expert Sven Stumbauer

NEW YORK, Aug. 8, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Driven in part by an aggressive regulatory-enforcement environment for anti-money laundering (AML) and recent U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Compliance (OFAC) actions which have led to an increase in fines and sanctions, the global business-advisory firm AlixPartners today announced an expansion of its Corporate Investigations Practice with the appointment of compliance veteran Sven Stumbauer. Stumbauer, a director, will focus on financial-crimes and anti-money-laundering compliance services.

"Given the unprecedented level of enforcement actions brought by various regulatory bodies regarding AML- and OFAC-compliance matters, multinational companies in general, and financial institutions in particular, have an even greater need for advisory services and risk-management solutions to assist them," said Harvey Kelly, managing director at AlixPartners and global leader of the firm's Financial Advisory Services unit. "Having worked on some of the largest and most significant investigations in recent history, our professionals are accustomed to working with U.S. and global regulatory bodies and understand what meets compliance standards. The practical experience that Sven and his team bring to our investigations group is a natural fit for us."

Stumbauer joins AlixPartners from KPMG, where he was a director in its risk advisory practice and led high-profile AML-, OFAC- and U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA)-compliance advisory and investigative engagements globally. In his career, Stumbauer has developed a client base of major financial institutions throughout the world, including domestic and international banks, broker-dealers, insurance companies, trust companies and hedge funds. He has a wealth of experience leading complex, high-profile global projects and providing regulatory-consulting and investigative services to clients in the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.

Stumbauer has led major engagements involving AML-compliance, fraud and corruption investigations, transactional due diligence and compliance training for both financial institutions and regulators.  He has also provided expert guidance to leading financial institutions and their boards of directors on compliance with the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act, the U.S. Patriot Act, U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control regulations, the U.S. Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act and the U.S. FCPA.

Stumbauer has also worked on a wide array of issues pertaining to investigations and advisory services for his clients. He has extensive hands-on experience providing advisory services around government matters involving deferred-prosecution agreements, cease-and-desist orders and memoranda of understanding. He has developed and led numerous presentations and reports to various government agencies such as the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the U.S. Federal Reserve, the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Stumbauer began his career as a compliance examiner in the Atlanta office of the National Association of Securities Dealers (now FINRA).  Previously, he was a managing director at a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm, leading its Miami office and client-service delivery in the U.S. and Latin America. Prior to that, he was a director in the risk-consulting practice of KPMG.

"I am excited to join AlixPartners and to work with a team of such experienced professionals," said Stumbauer.  "I am looking forward to helping expand the firm's Corporate Investigations Practice both in the U.S. and across Latin America and the Caribbean."

Over the years, AlixPartners professionals have also served as experts on behalf of multinational companies all over the world in several high-profile investigations and litigation matters involving allegations related to fraud, bribery involving the FCPA and the U.K. Bribery Act, anti-money laundering and anti-corruption.

Stumbauer holds an MBA from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in international trade from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.  He also studied at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration in Austria, and holds a degree in mechanical engineering from HTBL WienX, Austria.  He has served on the board of directors of the Florida International Bankers Association since 2006, and frequently speaks on regulatory trends in the financial-services industry and has been published in a wide range of industry journals. He is fluent in English, German, Czech, Slovak, Russian and Spanish.
