UPDATE: My Possibilities to Host 6th Annual Golf Tournament on Aug. 26

Event Benefitting Adults With Special Needs to be Held at Canyon Creek Country Club

PLANO, Texas, Aug. 13, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- My Possibilities (MP), a Plano-based non-profit education center dedicated to empowering adults with cognitive disabilities, is holding the center's 6th Annual Golf Tournament on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 at the Canyon Creek Country Club in Richardson. The tournament has become so popular during the past five years that My Possibilities is expanding and launching a two-flight event.

Open to golfers of any skill level that have an interest in supporting educational opportunities for adults with special needs, registration is available online at a cost of $150 per player or $600 per team. Additional information on the tournament is available at http://www.mypossibilities.org/event/golf/. Late registration starts at the club at 7 a.m. with breakfast provided by The Egg and I for the first flight. Registration for the second flight starts at 1 p.m., and lunch is provided by Mattito's Tex-Mex. A special awards presentation banquet will follow each flight.

In addition to the golf fundraiser, My Possibilities and their sponsors are also hosting an auction of two souvenirs from the 2014 Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta. Pro-golfer and 2013 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, Jordan Spieth, has generously donated two autographed items for the auction – a pin flag and an official placeholder chair that were used during the April Masters tournament.

"In North Texas, more than 200,000 adults live with cognitive disabilities, and 20,000 of that population resides in Collin County alone, so the need for support is great," said Charmaine Solomon, chairman of the center. "Each year support for the center comes from a variety of sources, and it is heartwarming to see the growing number of businesses and individuals turning out to raise funds for our students that we affectionately call the HIPsters (Hugely Important People) during the Annual Golf Tournament."

"Our friends from Berry Family Services and Frost Bank have signed on as the event's Platinum Sponsors, while Folsom Properties, Inc. and Janis and Kenneth Kozlowski are two of the tournament's Silver Sponsors. Skechers, the tournament's third Silver Sponsor, will award a pair of Golf shoes to each player on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place team in each flight. Bronze Sponsors include: Smith Exploration, Heritage Land Bank, Legacy Texas Bank, Oxford Associates, Inc., Aimbridge Hospitality and Ebby Halliday Realtors. Hole-in-One Sponsors include North Central Ford and BMW of Dallas. Contributors of food and other prizes include: The Egg and I, Mattito's Tex-Mex, Blue Plate Network, NovoWorks Color Imaging, Crown Trophy Plano, Cutting Edge Pediatric Therapy, Nestlé Waters North America, Old American Golf Club, and Copart Inc.," she added.

In addition to the tournament, auction, meals, activities and other gifts, HIPster Hero Cards are available for $50. Each card provides two drink tickets, two mulligans, the poker game and admission into the One Putt Contest which features a $10,000 cash prize for the qualifying golfers who can sink a 60-foot putt.

Each week, My Possibilities serves 300 HIPsters. Recognized as the only program of its kind in the United States, My Possibilities provides continuing education and vocational training for adults with cognitive disabilities such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Asperger's and others. "We have an important mission," noted Solomon. "State funding for families with special needs adults is lower in Texas than in any other state, and the support we receive from the community during our fundraising efforts helps us provide a state-of-the-art facility and all day services for under $20 per client per day. Our corporate sponsors, friends, neighbors and other concerned citizens in North Texas are the foundation of our program, and we deeply appreciate their ongoing support."
