Public Transit: An Infrastructure Investment That Knows No Boundaries

CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND--(Marketwired - Aug. 26, 2014) -

The island becomes a busier place today as Representatives from the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) join Premiers and delegates at the Council of the Federation meeting starting today in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The leaders meet to strengthen partnerships and collaborate on efforts that make a difference not only across provincial lines, but across the country.

Infrastructure, as punctuated by the August 6 Infrastructure Summit "Building Canada Up" in Toronto led by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, is one of those difference-makers. "Investing in the building blocks of our cities through integrated urban mobility is a recipe for economic growth" says CUTA Chair Daniel Bergeron, who is attending the meetings along with Michael Roschlau, CUTA's President & CEO.

"Our urban centres are the economic drivers of our national economy," Bergeron says. "Strengthening investments in public transit, for example, creates a win-win across all orders of government and across provincial and territorial boundaries". In fact, for every dollar invested in Canada in public transit, three dollars are returned to the economy, the kind of news any investor would like to hear.

"We're here to highlight the importance of collaboration and strong leadership from our premiers" says Michael Roschlau, President and CEO of CUTA. "To keep pace with our urban population growth, public transit in Canada needs an investment partnership between all orders of government as well as the private sector" he says.

The transit industry contributes 12 billion to the national economy every year, making this municipal matter not only a provincial priority, but a federal investment that knows no boundaries. "We are looking forward to the report from the "Building Canada Up" Infrastructure Summit that will be released here in Charlottetown," says Bergeron. It is an important step towards identifying what and how to maximize our resources, strengthen our messaging and build a better Canada for Canadians".
