What: | Jeanne Warner, wife of former Sen. John Warner and ship's sponsor, |
will smash a bottle of sparkling wine across the submarine's bow | |
on Saturday, Sept. 6, to christen the newest Virginia-class submarine | |
John Warner (SSN 785), the only Virginia-class submarine to be named | |
after a person. Media are invited to attend the ceremony as well as a | |
media preview event on Friday, Sept. 5, in advance of the ceremony. | |
The preview event will provide the opportunity to interview Newport | |
News Shipbuilding leadership, shipbuilders who have helped | |
to build the submarine, and the Warner crew. Sen. Warner and his wife | |
will not attend Friday's media event but will be available for interviews | |
Saturday following the ceremony. | |
The christening ceremony is open only to invited guests, including | |
shipbuilders and their families; John Warner sailors and their families; | |
the Warner family and guests; HII President and CEO Mike Petters; | |
Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin; and Navy and | |
government representatives. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will | |
serve as the keynote speaker. Sen. Warner will also make remarks. | |
HII will provide a live, multi-camera satellite broadcast of the | |
christening ceremony in its entirety. Coordinates are below. | |

All equipment must be on the bus upon departure; media will not | |
have access to their vehicles once we have entered the shipyard. | |

- From I-64 (either westbound or eastbound)
- Take Exit #264 to Interstate I-664 toward Downtown Newport News/ Suffolk
- Take Exit #5 (35th Street) to Warwick Blvd.
- Travel approximately 3 miles on Warwick Blvd.
- Immediately after 69th Street, make a U-turn on to Huntington Ave.
- Merge into the right lane and continue to bear right on to Shipyard Drive
- Continue downhill and stay straight, then follow signs to media parking
