WEINBERG FOUNDATION EMPLOYEES GIVEN TOTAL OF $340,000 TO BE GRANTMAKERS FOR A DAY

17 employees each award $20,000 to charity of their choice


BALTIMORE, Md., Sept. 9, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the United States, today hosts its 8th annual Employee Giving Program. At the event, 17 employees will each present a check for $20,000 to a Maryland nonprofit, consistent with the Foundation's mission and grant guidelines. A total of $340,000 will be awarded this year. More than $1 million has been distributed since the inception of this professional development and mission-focused effort.

During today's event, each Weinberg Foundation employee will speak briefly about the nonprofit receiving a grant and will present a $20,000 check to the charity's representative who will also speak. This year's grantees include:

1) Baltimore Alliance for Careers in Healthcare, Inc.
Addresses unemployment, underemployment, and healthcare workforce shortage issues
2) The Baltimore School for the Arts Foundation
Works closely with the community to support the students and programs at Baltimore School for the Arts
3) Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore
Strives to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens
4) CHANA
Responds to the needs of persons who experience abuse and other forms of interpersonal trauma
5) Community Conferencing Center
Provides ways for people to safely, collectively, and effectively prevent and resolve conflicts and crime
6) Community Support Services for the Deaf, Inc.
Supports the personal well-being, growth, independence, and achievement of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing
7) Dayspring Programs, Inc.
Strives to improve the quality of life for children and families focusing on those affected by substance abuse, homelessness, and poverty
8) Franciscan Center, Inc.
Provides emergency assistance and supportive outreach to persons who are economically disadvantaged in an effort to assist them in realizing their self-worth and dignity as people of God
9) Job Opportunities Task Force, Inc.
Develops and advocates policies and programs to increase the skills, job opportunities, and incomes of low-skill, low-income workers and job seekers
10) Maria's Hope d/b/a CUPs Coffeehouse & Kitchen
A workforce development program dedicated to providing quality catering and changing lives in our community
11) Marriott Foundation for People with Disabilities, Inc./"Bridges-Baltimore"
Engages employers, schools, community resources, youth, and their families to help businesses meet their workforce needs while offering young people with disabilities the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed through employment
12) Next One Up Foundation
Strives to enrich the lives of Baltimore City student-athletes by supporting their academic, athletic, and social development
13) People Encouraging People
Provides life-transforming rehabilitation and support services to people who are disabled or disadvantaged
14) Sarah's House
Provides emergency and transitional housing for homeless families in Anne Arundel County
15) TurnAround, Inc.
Provides counseling and support services to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence
16) Urban Alliance Foundation, Inc.
Empowers under-resourced youth to aspire, work, and succeed through paid internships, formal training, and mentorship
17) Westminster Rescue Mission, Inc.
Provides a residential addictions recovery program as well as general community support including a food pantry and distribution program
