Clark University offers full-ride LEEP Scholarships

WORCESTER, Mass., Sept. 15, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Clark University is offering five, full-ride academic LEEP Scholarships, named for the University's unique and pioneering model for higher education, Liberal Education and Effective Practice (LEEP).

LEEP combines Clark's highly interactive and integrated undergraduate curriculum with opportunities to put knowledge into practice and prepare students for remarkable careers and purposeful, accomplished lives.

LEEP Scholarships will be awarded to up to five of Clark's strongest first-year students.

LEEP Scholars will receive:

  • Full tuition, room, and board for four years – each with a per-student value of approximately $190,000—as well as the opportunity to complete a tuition-free, accelerated master's degree in only one year after completing the requirements for the undergraduate major.
  • An amazing achievement to add to a portfolio or resume. In 2014, Clark received more than 7,000 applications, awarding LEEP Scholarships to just four worthy students. LEEP Scholars will be able to count themselves in the top one percent of their class.
  • A truly deep learning experience. With a wide variety of learning opportunities—in the classroom, workplace, community, and across the world—LEEP Scholars will also have an array of resources with which to explore interests in depth.
  • A chance to change higher education. As LEEP Scholars, students will work with the University not only to help shape this pioneering program for future Clark students, but also to impact college education nationwide.

"LEEP ensures that students build the knowledge and the skills employers seek, the world needs, and they require to flourish personally, professionally, and civically," said Clark University President David Angel.

With the guidance and mentorship of experts, students will design an ambitious academic track including interdisciplinary courses, internships, research projects, and study abroad experiences. They'll work closely with professors, researchers, industry experts, and peers to understand and creatively address actual problems. Students will also have the opportunity to work on a LEEP Project with a faculty member and an external partner, providing real on-site experience and demonstrating mastery of the five LEEP learning outcomes, including the ability to integrate skills and knowledge and to solve complex problems through creative thinking, collaboration, and persistence.

Clark's LEEP is the culmination of years of research in the learning sciences and emerging adulthood, and is guided by the essential learning outcomes of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC &U).

According to AAC &U President Carol Geary Schneider, "A 21st century liberal education requires a blended model of engaged learning in the liberal arts integrated with more practical, hands-on experience in communities and in workplaces. Clark University is leading the way in reinventing liberal education to prepare today's students for a world of work and life — increasingly characterized by diversity, complexity, and change."
