Applied Optoelectronics Introduces DOCSIS 3.1 CATV Products

SUGAR LAND, Texas, Sept. 16, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (Nasdaq:AAOI), a leading provider of fiber-optic access network products for the cable broadband, internet data center, and fiber-to-the-home markets, today announced the introduction of a family of transmitter and receiver products that are compliant with the new DOCSIS 3.1 standard, which allows faster internet connections over a CATV network. The products will be customized to meet the needs of CATV OEM customers.

"Cable providers are preparing to readily adopt the DOCSIS 3.1 specification which helps them meet the increasing demand for faster bandwidth by consumers," said Joshua Yeh, Senior Vice President of AOI's Network Equipment Module Business Unit. "Our new products will not only enable more data throughput over the same spectrum but will also provide a very cost-effective upgrade to current MSO networks."

AOI's new products include a 1310-nm high-density optical transmitter, a DWDM QAM optical transmitter, a high-density dual reverse receiver, and a forward receiver with 1.2 GHz of bandwidth. The 1310-nm and DWDM transmitters and dual reverse receivers are used in CATV head-ends while the forward receiver is used in CATV outdoor nodes to receive downstream-transmitted data signaling.

The new 1310-nm CATV high-density forward path transmitter and forward optical receiver support downstream bandwidth up to 1.2 GHz. To improve efficiency, these transmitters and receivers feature low power consumption and compact size to enable high chassis density for the transmitter, and a compact footprint for the receiver.

AOI's high-density low noise dual reverse receiver features an upstream bandwidth up to 300 MHz. The new design optimizes the optical receiver to achieve low noise and low distortion.

The full spectrum dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmitter offers 1.2 GHz of downstream spectrum and features lower noise and improved distortion performance compared with earlier generations of QAM transmitters.

The products are custom-designed for various chassis and node platforms, and samples of the 1310-nm CATV 1.2 GHz forward path transmitter, 1.2 GHz forward receiver, and the 300 MHz reverse receiver will be made available upon request. Samples of the full spectrum DWDM QAM transmitter will be available at the end of 2014.
