AppliedMicro and Acacia Communications Deliver Highest Density, Lowest Power Solution for 100G Metro Cloud Networks

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 17, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- AppliedMicro (Nasdaq:AMCC) and Acacia Communications today announced interoperability between AppliedMicro's 100G(X12/X120), 200G(X24/X240) Smart PHY family OTN Processors and Acacia's AC100-CFP 100G PM-QPSK Coherent CFP module. Together, AppliedMicro and Acacia enable unprecedented density at the lowest power, dramatically improving total cost of ownership (TCO). This break-through solution enables broad adoption of 100G in metro cloud networks.

Rapid growth in data center and cloud connectivity services and accelerating ultra-broadband access is driving 100G in the metro network. Service providers and cloud operators are challenged to address this bandwidth growth with appropriately sized, low power and cost-effective solutions. AppliedMicro and Acacia products are optimized to address these new challenges.

AppliedMicro's highly integrated Smart PHY OTN processor, combined with Acacia's small form factor coherent CFP module, reduces 75% of the power compared to existing 100G coherent transponder system solutions. This demonstrated interoperability provides a complete 100G subsystem for OEMs and system vendors to deliver performance and power-optimized, cost-effective 100G solutions.

"Interoperability between APM's framer and Acacia's 100G coherent CFP accelerates the speed at which equipment vendors can design and deliver 100G coherent solutions to customers," said Andrew Schmitt, Principal Analyst, Carrier Transport Networking at Infonetics Research.

"Acacia's lowest power, smallest form factor AC100-CFP 100G coherent CFP enables the highest densities for 100G coherent interfaces in the industry, and reducing the total cost per bit while requiring the lowest power of all 100G Coherent Transceivers," said Christian Rasmussen, co-founder and Director of DSP Development at Acacia. "Our solution is ideally suited to address the rapid growth of 100G metro networks, which require massive increases in capacity at lower price points."

"AppliedMicro's 28nm low power X12/X120 and X24/X240 X-Weave™ products deliver up to 240Gbps capacity in a single device and enable high density Terabit 100G line card solutions," said Tracy Ma, Director of Product Marketing at AppliedMicro. "With 28G I/O and 100G gearbox integration, our Smart PHY OTN processors can seamlessly interface with current generation coherent modules and new generation CFP2, CFP4, QSFP28 pluggable modules. This further optimizes the power and cost for 100G metro cloud network solutions."

X12/X120, X24/X240 Smart PHYs Overview

The family of devices is highly integrated Smart PHY OTN processors with the complete support of OTN framer/mapper features and a rich set of interfaces for 10G, 40G and 100G including 25G/28G CAUI-4/OTL4.4 100G interfaces, XFI/XLAUI/CAUI/OTL3.4/OTL4.10 and Interlaken packet interfaces. The devices also integrate Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC), fractional clock synthesis and jitter attenuation phase locked loops (PLLs) that enable the devices to seamlessly interface to a variety of optical and copper interconnections. Besides exceptional performance and flexibility, the devices introduce a new security feature, IEEE802.1AE compliant MACSec for 10GE/ 40GE/100GE, to address the emerging demands for wire-rate network security in service provider and data center applications.

AC100-CFP module Overview

Utilizing ultra-low power CMOS design and process for Digital Signal Processing ASIC as well as highly integrated photonic circuits, the AC100-CFP delivers 100Gbps service over PM-QPSK modulation format for data-center interconnections as well as metro, regional and long-haul transmission applications. Notably, the module fits into an OIF MSA compliant CFP form factor. Due to the CFP form factor, low power consumption and superior optical performance, the AC100-CFP can be integrated into transport, OTN switching, PTN and router platforms with minimum effort. Customers with AC100-CFP can benefit from plug-n-play, pay-as-grow and low maintenance cost.

In volume production and generally available, the AC100-CFP modules are GR-468-Core qualified. For more information, please visit the Acacia website:
