Needle-stick Safety Not a Top Legislative Healthcare Priority in Asia-Pacific: Stable Markets Projected in Japan, Australia, South Korea

While the U.S. has completed the transition from conventional to safety devices among a popular vascular access device type, the Asia-Pacific market still lags behind due to a lack of legislation, reports iData Research

VANCOUVER, BC, Oct. 20, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - According to a new report from iData Research (http://www.idataresearch.com), the Asia-Pacific region vascular access device market, encompassing Japan, Australia, South Korea, India and China, is stable, but could grow if authorities take measures to promote the use of safety devices. Among vascular access technology, safety features help prevent needle-stick injuries, which can present a significant occupational hazard for healthcare workers.

Specifically, the market for peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs), the device that connects an 'IV' to a patient's arm, could show the most growth if safety priorities change. "These countries depend heavily on PIVCs," explains CEO of iData Dr. Kamran Zamanian, "but given that needle-stick safety has not been a top legislative priority, safety PIVC device sales have been hindered. In South Korea, for example, safety products represented less than 5% of PIVC sales."

The largest Asia-Pacific market for PIVCs, Japan, has shifted to approximately two-thirds safety devices. In Australia, governmental agencies in the different states have advocated the use of safety devices to protect healthcare practitioners.

Other key findings from the iData Research report entitled Asia-Pacific Markets for Vascular Access Devices include:

Asia-Pacific Market Potential for Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs)
Japan represents one of the largest opportunities for PICCs. Unit sales of PICCs in Japan represented less than 5% of total unit sales of CVCs. In the United States and Australia, this percentage is over 70% and 40%, respectively. If countries such as Japan, South Korea and India move towards increasing use of PICCs, then the market for vascular access devices will experience significant growth.

Central Venous Catheter (CVC) Markets in China and India: Premium Products
China and India will present the largest opportunities for growth in the CVC markets. However, the presence of local manufacturers that sell a large volume at a significant discount will present a challenge. International companies in these markets have focused on high-tier hospitals in order to sell premium-priced products.

Dialysis Demand in South Korea
The incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasing in all countries covered, particularly in South Korea. Demand for dialysis treatment is growing, with Japan growing at only 1.3%, Australia at over 3%, and South Korea at nearly 5%. The market in South Korea has significant growth potential due to the increasing number of patients requiring dialysis and the possibility that reimbursement will increase. Currently, reimbursement for dialysis treatment in South Korea is almost half the reimbursement in Australia, and nearly 40% below the rates in Japan.

Competitor Composition
Three of the top five leading competitors in the vascular access markets depend primarily on sales of PIVCs: Beckton Dickinson, Terumo, and Medkit. The PIVC market is projected to be valued at just under USD $150 million by 2021. Other leading competitors include C. R. Bard, Teleflex Medical, Covidien, B. Braun, Smiths Medical, Cook Medical, and Nipro Medical.
