SolarCity Appoints Jonathan Beamer as Chief Marketing Officer

SAN MATEO, CALIF., Oct. 20, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- SolarCity® (Nasdaq: SCTY), the nation's no. 1 solar service provider, today announced the appointment of Jonathan Beamer as Chief Marketing Officer. Beamer will report to Chief Revenue Officer Hayes Barnard and work to broaden awareness of SolarCity and its ability to give homeowners across America a cleaner, more affordable alternative to their utility bills.

Beamer joins SolarCity from Progressive Insurance, where he served as the Business Leader in Marketing Strategy and Innovation. He joined Progressive in 2011 to lead marketing brand strategy and execution across digital channels. At Progressive, he worked to extend the company's renowned Superstore TV ad campaign known for its cheerful insurance clerk, Flo; created the foundation of the Box advertising campaign targeting price sensitive insurance consumers; and strengthened Progressive's digital and social media presence, including by launching Progressive's first digital-only campaign, Baby Man, designed to help potential customers realize that they can shop around for their insurance rather than sticking with their parents' plans of old.

"Many people don't know that they have an option to shop around for their electricity because they're used to paying monthly utility bills the way their parents always have—I expect Jonathan Beamer to change that," said Barnard. "Jonathan is great at finding novel ways to reach consumers and he will focus on lowering SolarCity's customer acquisition costs."

Prior to his work at Progressive, Beamer served as senior vice president of strategy and analysis at Digitas, a global marketing agency with digital technology at its core. His work focused on identifying where firms should most effectively and efficiently spend their marketing dollars to deliver optimal return.

"Solar is still a young industry, yet it is already beginning to transform America's energy infrastructure," Beamer said. "The vast majority of Americans want to use more solar power, but few realize that SolarCity can make it so simple and affordable."

Beamer holds bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, where he focused on embedded microcontrollers in mechanical systems, and an MBA, with distinction, from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
