Hemispherx Biopharma and United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) Collaborate on Alferon(R) and Ampligen(R) Against the Ebola Virus

... Initial Ebola Studies of Alferon(R) and Ampligen(R) at USAMRIID Show Protective Activity of Both Compounds at Low Concentrations

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 3, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hemispherx Biopharma, Inc. (NYSE MKT:HEB) (the "Company" or "Hemispherx"), has been informed by USAMRIID scientists that they have in-vitro data indicating that Alferon®, the only multi-species, natural alpha interferon (IFN) commercially approved in the U.S., successfully protected human cells against the Ebola virus. Low concentrations of Ampligen®, an experimental double-stranded (ds) RNA therapeutic, also successfully protected human cells against the Ebola virus USAMRIID plans to continue to collect data and to initiate in-vitro synergy studies using Alferon® and Ampligen®. Previous published studies have demonstrated synergy between Ampligen and alpha interferon with HIV. The overall effect is to establish a framework for clinical interventions in both preventative and therapeutic settings of Ebola virus disease (EVD) by rational combinations of the two experimental products to treat Ebola.

About Alferon® N

Alferon® N is the only natural source, multi-species alpha interferon currently approved for sale in the U.S. Alferon® N is approved in the U.S. only for the treatment of refractory or recurring external genital warts caused by human papilloma virus in patients 18 years of age or older.

Clinical trial data will be necessary to establish the human efficacy of Alferon® N for EVD.

About Ampligen®

Ampligen®, an experimental therapeutic, is a new class of specifically-configured ribonucleic acid (RNA) compounds targeted as potential treatment of diseases with immunologic defects and/or viral causation.

Ebola virus specifically inhibits the dsRNA within cells via a sequestration process. Such RNA would otherwise cause a robust antiviral response to be mounted. Ampligen® may be able to overcome this deficiency in host response. Clinical trial data will be necessary to establish the human efficacy of Ampligen® for Ebola virus.

About USAMRIID

Since 1969, USAMRIID has served as the Department of Defense's (DoD) lead laboratory for medical biological defense research. While its core mission is to protect the warfighter from biological threats, it also investigates disease outbreaks and threats to public health. Research conducted at USAMRIID leads to medical solutions—therapeutics, vaccines, diagnostics, and information—that benefit both military personnel and civilians. USAMRIID is a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command.
