RegEd Launches New Education Offering Focused on Cybersecurity Risk Mitigation

Raleigh, NC, Nov. 20, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In response to the growing regulatory focus on cybersecurity awareness and training, RegEd, the leading provider of compliance education to financial services professionals, today announced a new curriculum focused on cybersecurity.  The first course, Cybersecurity: Requirements and Risk Mitigation Practices, is now available.

In 2014, the United States' Director of National Intelligence ranked cybersecurity as the #1 threat to U.S. national security, above even terrorism.  Both the SEC and FINRA announced cybersecurity as their top regulatory priorities and both agencies are conducting sweep exams to assess firms' cybersecurity policies, procedures and systems.  Contemporaneously, several large broker-dealers reported hacking incidents.

"Cybersecurity will be an area of significant regulatory attention for the next several years," said Wendy Snyder, RegEd's Chief Securities Editor and a lawyer, educator and former securities regulator.  "The first offering in the curriculum is a comprehensive treatise designed to provide the necessary foundation to support our clients' compliance efforts in this area; it examines potential areas of exposure, the current cybersecurity requirements and important best practices for risk mitigation."

At an SEC roundtable earlier this year, FINRA noted that it will be announcing additional recommended practices sometime after it concludes its current examinations.  RegEd will add new courses to the curriculum to address these additional recommendations and any future regulatory developments as they evolve.

Employee awareness and training is an important component of every firm's information security program.  Snyder noted, "The SEC is sending a 'Request for Information' to those firms it is assessing that specifically asks the firm to identify the dates, topics, and the groups of employees that participated in each cybersecurity training event conducted since January 1, 2013."  Snyder continued, "It also requests that the firm provide copies of any written materials used in the training program.  This is a strong indication of how important the Commission considers cybersecurity training."

Each year RegEd delivers more than one million CE courses and insurance certificates.  RegEd's comprehensive course library includes more than 350 courses that are approved to meet state continuing education requirements and fulfill professional designation requirements including CFP, CIMA and CPE.
