InterDigital's Innovation Partners Expands Its Relationship With McGill University in Canada

Research Agreement Funded by Canada's NSERC to Explore Haptics, Next Generation User Interfaces

WILMINGTON, Del., Nov. 25, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq:IDCC), a mobile technology research and development company, today announced that its Innovation Partners unit has entered into a collaboration agreement with McGill University in Montreal, Canada, a top rated university for both undergraduate and graduate studies and research. The collaboration, which explores new forms of mobile information delivery, is funded by a grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada.

As smartphones and emerging wearable devices have garnered mass market acceptance, the need to improve the way consumers interact with these technologies demands new approaches that will form the foundation of human computer interaction models for years to come.

"The worldwide mass adoption of smartphones has been fueled by two fundamental elements:  high-speed ubiquitous wireless connectivity, and innovations supporting dramatic improvements to the user experiences of these devices and associated services. InterDigital's historical focus has been on innovations driving dramatic improvements in mobile technology, and the extension of that focus to haptic technology and next-generation user interfaces through our Innovation Partners initiative and a great partner like McGill is a tremendous initiative," said Serhad Doken, Vice President, Partner Development, at InterDigital.

Information overload is synonymous with the Internet age, a problem that only seems to be increasing. "However, taking advantage of the computing power and context awareness of smartphones and wearable devices allows for interaction and non-graphical information delivery in a manner that integrates naturally with our daily activities," said Professor Jeremy Cooperstock, director of McGill University's Shared Reality Lab. Dr. Cooperstock's research investigates the opportunities to exploit other communication modalities, including haptics, to reduce the cognitive and attentional demands imposed by technology.

Innovation Partners is InterDigital's technology sourcing initiative based on partnerships with leading technology firms, inventors, universities and research organizations worldwide.
