Black & Veatch Provides Asset360 Software for Smart City Deployment at Port of San Diego

Data Analytics Technology Shows How Internet of Things Reduces Costs, Saves Energy

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 10, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Black & Veatch today announced that it is providing its Asset360 analytics software for the Port of San Diego Smart City Initiatives demonstration project. The project will use real-time information on the port's energy use to save power and reduce costs.

The port's Administration Building is the first in a series of public-private smart building initiatives aimed at improving the region's use of clean power. The Port is the landlord for 800 tenants and subtenants, creating an opportunity to collect and integrate energy information across hundreds of businesses. That information is pooled to reduce energy demand and cost-effectively purchase green energy.

Black & Veatch is among five technology providers – joining Intel, OSIsoft, Dell and San Diego Gas & Electric -- in providing sensors, software and other services to detect energy use. Those patterns become actionable information displayed using the Asset360 software platform. Port building operators can then adjust behaviors, reducing wasted energy and greenhouse gas emissions.

"Gathering data without the means to act upon it limits what Smart City programs can achieve. We are proud to help the port meet the goals of its Climate Action Plan by using analytics as a crucial tool for improving energy efficiency," said Scott Stallard, Black & Veatch Director of Smart Analytics.

Data is already flowing through the new system and is publicly displayed on an 80-inch monitor in the port's Administration Building. Black & Veatch and the other technology providers involved donated the hardware, software and services to the pilot project at the port's Administration Building to show how energy and cost savings realized via the data capture can be deployed elsewhere.
