Compuware Becomes World's Largest Software Company Exclusively Devoted to Optimization of Mainframe Environments

IBM System z Customers to Benefit Substantially as Thoma Bravo, LLC Completes Acquisition and Initiates Stated Strategy

  • Thoma Bravo, LLC closed its acquisition of Compuware on Dec. 15.
  • With the close of the acquisition, Thoma Bravo is implementing its previously announced plan to separate the company's mainframe and APM businesses—with the mainframe business carrying the Compuware name.
  • Chris O'Malley named Compuware CEO.
  • Compuware thereby becomes the largest software company in the world exclusively devoted to optimizing customers' IBM mainframe environments.
  • Customers will benefit substantially from both Compuware's new undiluted focus on the mainframe and the new freedom that being privately held will give management to focus on value-driven innovation.

DETROIT, Dec. 16, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Thoma Bravo, LLC has formally completed its acquisition of Compuware Corporation and implemented its previously announced plan to separate the company's mainframe and application performance management (APM) businesses—with the mainframe business carrying the Compuware name. Concurrently, former president of mainframe operations Chris O'Malley has been named Compuware's CEO.

Compuware is now the largest software company in the world exclusively devoted to optimizing customers' IBM mainframe environments.

This move substantially benefits the many companies around the world that continue to depend on the IBM System z platform. With the tremendous talent within Compuware inspired to maximize mainframe business value, the company will be able to innovate in ways that software companies with multiple conflicting businesses cannot.

"The mainframe lines-of-business being run inside large, publicly held software companies with multiple competitive priorities are being starved of the resources and support that are absolutely essential for executing on a long-term vision for customer value," said O'Malley. "As a standalone mainframe-committed ISV, on the other hand, Compuware can be the software partner that large enterprises so desperately need as they face the daunting challenge of protecting and advancing their indispensable IBM System z intellectual property—consisting of programs and data—in a relentlessly disruptive digital economy."

"The world's largest companies are reliant on mainframe technologies as they have been the repositories for incalculable financial, human and intellectual capital over the years," said Orlando Bravo, a managing partner at Thoma Bravo. "We have been incredibly impressed with Chris and the Compuware team and have full confidence that they can help those companies leverage their mainframe to excel in the digital economy."
