Entropic Jump Starts Whole Home Wi-Fi Using MoCA 2.0 Backbone

MoCA to 802.11ac Wi-Fi Reference Design Enables Whole Home Wireless Coverage; Eliminates Wi-Fi Dead Spots

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CES 2015 -- Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, today announced its collaboration with Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, to deliver a turn-key home networking reference design to enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), original device manufacturers (ODMs) and service providers to provide reliable whole-home wireless coverage. The new reference design will be shown at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, from January 6-9, 2015.

Entropic' reference design offers the latest technologies in wireless and coax home networking by pairing Entropic's EN2810, single chip second generation Multimedia Over Coax (MoCA) 2.0-based silicon and software with Qualcomm® VIVE dual-band, dual concurrent 802.11ac plus 802.11n Wi-Fi® solution to enable service providers and OEM/ODMs to deliver MoCA-to-Wi-Fi extender products. This collaboration continues Entropic and Qualcomm Atheros's long-standing relationship in providing reference designs for home networking products.

Service Providers are increasingly looking at ways to improve and better manage their subscribers' Wi-Fi networks. By using a MoCA 2.0 coax network as the wired backbone, service providers can deliver high speed Wi-Fi coverage to in-home dead spots where traditional single access points do not get coverage. This greatly expands the consumers' experience and reduces operator service calls regarding poor Wi-Fi coverage.

MoCA is already used by service providers worldwide to enable multi-room DVR and video gateway to IP client set-top box architectures. As more connected devices and appliances spread throughout the home, subscriber expectations for reliable Internet connectivity will increase. It is the natural choice for service providers to leverage their existing MoCA networks to facilitate the distribution of broadband data throughout their subscribers' home.

Entropic's MoCA 2.0 to Wi-Fi adapter is a dual band, dual concurrent design featuring Entropic's 2nd generation low-power MoCA 2.0 silicon, Qualcomm Atheros' QCA9563 2.4GHz 802.11N system-on-chip (SoC) and QCA9882, a 5GHz 802.11ac radio. The adapter is designed to offer the best performance and flexibility for extending the home's Wi-Fi network to deliver exceptional data and video throughput.

"The need for reliable distribution of video and data becomes increasingly critical with the growing number and variety of connected devices in the home and increasing bandwidth traffic on the network," said Al Servati, vice president, Marketing, Entropic. "As service providers start to manage their subscribers' Wi-Fi networks, consumers will naturally expect reliable coverage throughout all parts of their homes. Entropic and Qualcomm Atheros are making this possible with the latest MoCA 2.0 to Wi-Fi reference design."

"The proliferation of connected devices continues to accelerate in the Internet of Everything era," said Irvind Ghai, senior director of product management, Qualcomm Atheros. "MoCA 2.0 to 802.11ac Wi-Fi extenders provide device connectivity using coax as the home network backbone, maximizing the users' wireless internet experience anywhere in and around the house. Qualcomm Atheros is committed to delivering the best possible Wi-Fi experience to consumers. Our collaboration with Entropic serves the needs of a growing number of operators and subscribers alike."
