Cerner Collaborates With VFW to Help Improve Lives of Service Members During and After Their Service

Cerner to co-host virtual career fair, help modernize IT infrastructure, evaluate creation of patient health portal for VFW members

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 21, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Kansas City-based organizations Cerner Corp. (Nasdaq:CERN) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the nation's largest organization of combat veterans, have collaborated to support service members during and after their service.

Cerner will co-host a virtual career fair with the VFW from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST, Feb. 18, to connect service members and their family members with job openings at Cerner as they transition from military to civilian life. Veterans can qualify for Cerner positions, including system engineer, technical support analyst, implementation consultant, nurse and a variety of operational roles.

The health care information technology company has already hired more than 250 veterans and reservists and has a dedicated military talent program that assists veterans in their corporate career. Additionally, Cerner's website features an online military decoder tool that matches a service member's enlisted position with suggested roles within the company.

"Cerner is committed to veterans who have selflessly served our country, and we recognize the value they bring to our company," said Zane Burke, president, Cerner. "It is the right and smart thing to do for these talented, motivated and dedicated men and women. They have the skills to make a difference in the health care industry."

Cerner will also educate and collaborate with the VFW on how to leverage virtual platforms to connect veterans with new careers at other employers in additional industries in the future.

"America's service members bring unique skill sets and an unrivaled dedication and commitment to the workforce. We're glad that Cerner recognizes this and are pleased to be working with them on an endeavor that will undoubtedly assist many veterans in finding a career within which they will excel. It's an opportunity they deserve and have certainly earned," said John Stroud, VFW national commander.

As part of Cerner's commitment to veterans, Cerner will also consult on the modernization of the VFW's IT infrastructure. Updated systems will enable the VFW to use data to help identify and target new efforts to increase enrollment.

Additionally, Cerner will work with the VFW to evaluate the creation of a patient portal for its members. The platform would enable members to access their personal information and engage in the management of their health and care. Data captured through the patient portal will educate future advancements in early-identification algorithms for post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide prevention. The portal would also include other valuable resources, including tips on how to start a business and where to find financing.

Veterans interested in positions with Cerner can register for the virtual career fair at www.cernervfwvirtual.com/registration.
