ALLIED ELECTRONICS SPONSORS GADGET FREAK WORKSHOPS AND GADGET FREAK OF THE YEAR AWARDS

New Technology for Workshop Participants, $6,000 for GFOTY Winner

FORT WORTH, Texas, Feb. 5, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Allied Electronics, a trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE: ECM), announced today that they will sponsor the Gadget Freak Workshops on both February 10 and 11 at 1:00 pm in the Center Stage area of the Anaheim Convention Center. As well, Allied, sponsor of the Gadget Freak of the Year competition, will present a check to the First Place winner on February 10.

"The workshops take on a new dimension this year with the introduction of a Wireless Remote Demo," said Gabriel Reichman, Director of Customer Marketing for Allied. "Participants will learn how to build the remote from a Microchip Technology senior applications engineer, using parts supplied by Allied and Microchip, and can then use them during the event to light the LEDs in the badges of other Gadget Freaks. The Microchip Technology boards used in the workshop are not yet available to consumers, so those who take part in this workshop are getting a chance to work with some brand-new technology. Once they return home, those Gadget Freaks who took part in the workshop can use their expandable boards to create a range of useful things, including garage door openers, tire pressure monitoring sensors, automotive keyless entry systems, remote controls, and more."

"I'm honored to have been asked to present the 2015 Gadget Freak of the Year award," Reichman continued. "This year's $6,000 first prize goes to a team of engineering students from Colorado State University, who built the DDV-IP, or Drink Deliver Vehicle – Inverted Pendulum. It's a two-wheeled, self-balancing robot that can deliver drinks flawlessly without spilling a drop. Their professor recommended that the group not tackle such an advanced project, but they persevered and, through a process of self-education and trial and error, came up with an impressive gadget that is well-deserving of First Prize. Allied congratulates these creative, motivated young men, and wishes them all the best in their future endeavors."

Reichman will present the 2015 Gadget Freak of the Year Award to the winners as part of the Golden Mousetrap Awards, to be held on February 10, 2015 at the adjacent Anaheim Marriot in Anaheim, CA.
