Cedar Falls Dentist Participates in Iowa Mission of Mercy Volunteer Event

Dr. Thomas Strub Recently Had the Opportunity to Work With the Iowa Mission of Mercy Event in Waterloo, Iowa, Providing Free Dental Care to Those in Need

CEDAR FALLS, IA--(Marketwired - Feb 17, 2015) - With a commitment to helping others, Thomas Strub, DDS, PC, a dentist in Cedar Falls, recently worked with the annual Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) event to offer free dental care to those in need. Although the IMOM is held at different locations around Iowa each year, the 2014 event was held in Waterloo, Iowa -- the city where it was originally held in 2008, in which Dr. Strub also volunteered. The Cedar Falls dentist reflects on his experience, describing it as "extremely rewarding" and sharing his plans of participating in future IMOM events.

At this year's IMOM, Dr. Strub says that over 1,000 individuals volunteered their time to help those in need -- this included dentists, dental assistants and hygienists, laboratory technicians, and general volunteers. It has been estimated that over 6,000 dental procedures were performed over the two-day period, worth more than $700,000.

"We served those who do not have dental insurance and fall through the cracks of the federal welfare system," says Dr. Strub. He explains that many of the clinic patients had serious oral problems, including extensive decay and abscessed teeth that caused long-term pain. The dental volunteers were able to offer cleanings, root canals, fillings, extractions, and denture fabrication and repair.

Dr. Strub reflects on the event, saying: "My favorite part of any mission experience is to make a positive impact in someone's life that really needs help; to provide that care in a kind, empathetic, dignified and loving way; and to experience the heartfelt gratitude from the patient in return."
