West Coast University now offering online RN to Bachelor of Science and RN to Master of Science degrees in nursing

The new online programs will help meet the growing demand for registered nurses with advanced degrees and give WCU students the benefit of taking an online program with campus support and ongoing continuing education.

IRVINE, Calif., March 6, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- West Coast University is moving into the fast-growing world of distance learning this year by offering online RN to BSN and RN to MSN degree options that have benefits many online schools don't provide.

West Coast University students can study online and also have access to student support services like Career Services. Southern California students are able to visit the campus and use WCU's technologically advanced Simulation Centers.

Additionally, graduates of WCU are eligible for a complimentary membership to West Coast University's exclusive partner, Contemporary Forums, providing discounted continuing education courses, live or online.

"We pride ourselves on putting students first in all we do," said West Coast University President William C. Clohan. "This new online program illustrates our commitment to providing our students with a valuable and high-quality education and an opportunity for lifelong learning even after graduation."

With the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting the requirements for advanced nursing degrees in the health care field will continues to grow, many working nurses find online degrees an attractive option to improve their education and skills.

The Future of Nursing Campaign for Action has recommended that the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree be increased to 80 percent by 2020.

"By offering the RN to BSN and RN to MSN degrees, West Coast University is doing its part to meet the goal of preparing nurses with advanced degrees," said President Clohan. "Our program will help our graduates move into roles in leadership, basic health policy, evidence-based care and quality improvement and do so in a timely manner."

For example, West Coast University's online RN to BSN curriculum can be completed in as little as 12 months and allows up to 84 transfer credit hours.

RNs also have the opportunity to move directly to the MSN degree without the need to complete a BSN. The online RN to MSN program can be completed in 24 months and allows up to 90 transfer credit hours. Experience as a registered nurse may be counted as credit toward either degree. Applicants to the program must have an ADN or diploma in nursing and hold a current, unobstructed RN license in the U.S.
