STMicroelectronics Executive Vice-President Benedetto Vigna Awarded IEEE Frederik Philips Award


Geneva, March 10, 2015 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, today announced that Benedetto Vigna, Executive Vice President Analog, MEMS, and Sensors Group, has been awarded the Frederik Philips Award, presented by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for leadership in conceiving, developing, and commercializing micro-electro-mechanical systems; to date, ST has shipped more than 9 billion MEMS, sensors, and actuators to customers for consumer, automotive, and industrial applications.

The award was established in 1971 through an agreement between N.V. Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken (now Philips Electronics N.V.) and the IEEE. The Institute presents the award annually for outstanding accomplishments in managing research and development leading to effective innovation.

Since joining ST, Vigna has led his teams in delivering groundbreaking MEMS products that have first, transformed computer gaming, and then, enabled smartphones, tablets and new devices that rely on small, affordable, and easy-to-use sensing and actuating. Vigna's foundational work on accelerometers and gyroscopes, and later on microphones and actuators, has produced over 170 patents representing MEMS technology and paved the way for almost 1000 more patents for ST's MEMS innovations.
