DONG Energy awards meter contract to Kamstrup

Getting ready to replace approximately one million electricity meters

DONG Energy Eldistribution is getting ready to replace approximately one million electricity meters in North Sealand, the Greater Copenhagen area and on Frederiksberg.

The EU tender round for the supply and installation of electricity meters and communication systems as well as the subsequent operation for up to 15 years has now been completed. On Thursday 26 March, a contract covering almost  DKK 1.8bn has been awarded to Kamstrup which supplies metering solutions for electricity, heating, cooling and water to energy and utility companies all over the world.

The contract between DONG Energy and Kamstrup is expected to be signed in April.

Morten Buchgreitz, Executive Vice President in DONG Energy, said: "I'm convinced that Kamstrup is the right partner for us. Every day, approximately 1,500 electricity customers will have their meter replaced in the period from 2017 to 2020 and together with Kamstrup, we'll do our utmost to ensure that it takes place in a satisfactory way for our customers."

With remote electricity meters and the introduction of hourly billing in Denmark, electricity customers will have their energy consumption measured once an hour going forward. Measurement on an hourly basis is a prerequisite for creating a more flexible electricity market with the possibility of better utilising the renewable energy production.

Furthermore, according to the Danish Energy Agency, experience shows that remote reading and hourly billing increase customers’ awareness of their electricity consumption, and it can reduce the electricity consumption of the individual household by several per cent. Remote reading also means that in future, DONG Energy's electricity customers do not need to read their electricity meter once a year.

The information provided in this announcement does not change DONG Energy’s previous financial guidance for the 2015 financial year or the announced expected net investment level for 2015-2016.
