Plastic Surgeons in Chicago Reveal When to Consider Breast Lift With Augmentation

Lorri Cobbins, MD and Brian Braithwaite, MD of The Aesthetic Institute of Chicago Highlight When Mastopexy With Implants May Be the Best Option for a Patient's Breast Enhancement Goals

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - Apr 2, 2015) - According to Dr. Lorri Cobbins, a plastic surgeon in Chicago, breast lift surgery (mastopexy) can elevate and recontour the breasts for a younger-looking shape and projection, but the procedure cannot add a substantial amount of volume. Similarly, she adds, a breast augmentation can increase the size of the breasts, but implants alone are not able to provide a significant lift. As a result, she says a combination of the two surgeries may be necessary for women who desire to both lift and enlarge their breasts.

At The Aesthetic Institute of Chicago, Dr. Cobbins and her colleague, Dr. Brian Braithwaite, note that mastopexy with implants is a popular procedure among breast enhancement patients. In addition to lifting the breasts to a more youthful position while simultaneously adding volume, the Chicago plastic surgeons reveal that combining a breast lift with augmentation can also improve the contour of the breasts, as well as help extend the longevity of results that can be achieved by mastopexy alone.

In regard to the actual procedure, Dr. Braithwaite explains that the implant will first be placed in the breast pocket, followed by the excision of excess skin and reshaping of tissues to achieve an optimal projection and contour. The nipple is then repositioned accordingly, he adds, and the diameter of the areola can also be reduced, if desired. Recovery from a breast lift with augmentation is similar to what patients would experience if either procedure was performed without the addition of the other, states Dr. Cobbins. Patients are typically able to return to non-strenuous jobs after approximately three to four days, she says, and all activities can generally be resumed about four to six weeks after surgery.

Ultimately, Drs. Cobbins and Braithwaite stress the importance of seeking a board certified plastic surgeon when considering any form of breast enhancement surgery. By doing so, they note that patients can be assured they are receiving the best advice, recommendations, and care for their unique needs and goals.
