Cerner Canada Celebrates 30 Years of Transforming Health Care

MARKHAM, Ontario, April 14, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Thirty years ago, Cerner welcomed its first Canadian client, The Ottawa Hospital, into the Cerner family, Cerner Canada now hosts more than 62,000 Millennium® users throughout the country,

Cerner, a global leader in health care information technology, collaborates with our clients to implement solutions that can help eliminate medical errors, improve outcomes and increase efficiency in over 18,000 health care facilities around the world.

Today, Cerner Canada has 31 client facilities live with Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) with more than 13,000 physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other authorized caregivers viewing patient status, considering evidence, entering orders, documenting their actions and sharing information in a single, easy-to-use patient record.

"Over time, our passion for this work has only escalated because we understand how information technology (IT) can increasingly be ever more relevant in helping clients, their patients, and our friends, families and communities," said Jim Shave, president of Cerner Canada. "Having the privilege of working with our clients who share a similar passion, we are in the fortunate position to help entire health systems improve the health and well-being of their communities. We help empower organizations to better know, manage and engage the populations they serve. We enable their medical team to focus on people — not technology."

In 1985, The Ottawa Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario implemented Cerner laboratory solution – PathNet®. Today, Cerner Canada connects people and systems across nine out of 10 provinces, and more than 400 facilities.

Recently, Cerner Canada client Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH) was awarded HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 recognition for EMR Adoption Model℠. TEGH is only the fifth Canadian hospital to achieve Stage 6.

TEGH committed to achieving a fully automated medical record over 15 years ago, knowing this would be a key driver in supporting efficiency, effectiveness and quality in its core business, providing excellent patient care.

"Effective communication is the single most important element in ensuring high quality and a safe environment for patients. Cerner and TEGH shared a commitment to developing an electronic chart to ensure all providers in the organization would have a single source of truth," notes Pegi Rappaport, chief information officer at TEGH. TEGH's charting system is now 96 percent electronic and covers the inpatient, day surgery and ambulatory areas within the hospital.

This marks Cerner Canada's second client awarded HIMSS Analytics Stage 6. In 2011, North York General Hospital in Toronto also achieved this recognition. The HIMSS Analytics Adoption score measures organizational progress towards the ultimate goal of a paperless patient record environment.

Today, Cerner Canada supports the clinical and operational needs of organizations of every size, touching countless lives along the way. Three decades later, the opportunity to impact health care has never been greater.

"We believe our work in health care IT is an incredible privilege and accountability that we do not take lightly. Cerner Canada would like to thank our more than 62,000 Cerner Millennium® users, our partners and our Canadian associates, for their tireless efforts and ongoing commitment to our unrelenting pursuit of improving health care delivery and the health of our communities," said Shave.

Cerner Canada is proud to celebrate its 30th anniversary at the 2015 Canada Collaboration Forum, which will take place in Niagara Falls, Ontario on April 19 to 21.
