Secretary of the United States Navy Directs the Navy to Expand Its Use of LEDs

SOLON, Ohio, April 15, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Energy Focus, Inc. (Nasdaq:EFOI), a leader in LED lighting technologies, is pleased to note that the Secretary of the United States Navy, (SECNAV) Ray Mabus, has directed that LED lighting be installed on all new ship construction. The news release regarding the memo can be accessed here: http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=86532.

Energy Focus' extensive history as an LED technology partner of the U.S. Government has led to the development of brighter, longer lasting and more energy efficient shipboard tubular LED lamps compared to fluorescent lamps. The Naval Sea System Command has identified in its business case analysis that LEDs use approximately 50 percent less energy and last up to five times longer than conventional fluorescent lights. The longer life of the tubular LED lamps offered by Energy Focus also means that less storage space on a ship needs to be dedicated to replacement bulbs, thereby freeing the space for other operational uses.

"We are continuing to become more efficient in how we use energy," said Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus. "The move to LED saves between two and three percent of the total fuel usage for each ship and that adds up in a fleet of 300 ships. Upgrading to LEDs on our ships will increase our ability to provide the global presence that is vital to America's national security and economic well-being."

According to the release issued by the Secretary of the Navy Public Affairs Office, LED lighting's increased operational life translates into 80 percent less time spent on ladders and lifts changing bulbs. The Navy Safety Office predicts this will cut down on slips, trips, and falls, which are the most common shipboard injuries, thus improving Sailors' quality of life, saving time, and reducing safety risks.

"We are extremely pleased to hear that Secretary Mabus is committed to using LEDs to support energy efficiency in the growing Navy fleet," said Eric Hilliard, President and Chief Operating Officer of Energy Focus Inc. "Energy Focus is honored to be a part of this effort by the Navy to both retrofit the existing ships and equipping new ships with our advanced LED lighting offerings."
